Autumn in Le Lioran: calm and colour

Golden forests, rutting stags and peaceful trails: autumn in the heart of the Cantal mountains, starting from the Chalet des Alpages.

Once the summer bustle has faded and before the first snow, Le Lioran finds its calm again. Beech and rowan trees turn orange and gold, the morning air is crisp and the low light sets the slopes ablaze. It is the perfect season for walking, running, listening to nature and getting together somewhere warm.

Hiking and trail running

Autumn trails

The Font d'Alagnon loop

Our favourite: the short loop that starts just behind the chalet. On foot or trail running, you tread a carpet of orange leaves beneath the beech and fir trees.

The Plomb du Cantal

The highest point of the Cantal (1,855 m), about 1 h 30 on foot from the chalet. Set off early: the days are getting shorter.

The Puy Griou

About 1 h 10 on foot from the chalet to its pointed cone. On a clear day, the view over the colourful forests is superb.

Nature

Rutting stags and mushrooms

From late September to mid-October, the roaring of rutting stags echoes through the forests of the Cantal mountains, especially at dawn and dusk. The Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Park runs guided listening outings: an unforgettable experience, to be enjoyed quietly and at a distance from the animals.

The woods are also perfect for picking ceps and chanterelles. Only pick what you can identify with certainty, and follow local regulations.

Local food and festivals

Cornet festival, cheeses and markets

In September, Murat, a small medieval town a few minutes from the chalet, celebrates its sweet speciality at the Fête du Cornet: a crisp cone filled with cream. Country markets and cheese dairies showcase Cantal and Salers PDO cheeses, and autumn is the perfect season for a truffade or a pounti after a walk.

Getting together

Autumn by the stove

Back from a walk, Les Grands Alpages become the ideal retreat for family and friends. The pellet stove warms the living area, board games and table football liven up the evenings, the library on the Cantal invites you to read and the gym takes over on rainy days.

And everywhere, the calm of the mountains out of season: perfect for the autumn half-term holidays.
